Abiola Ajimobi Technical University (Tech-U), Ibadan, on Saturday graduated 183 students at its fifth convocation ceremony, with 50 of them earning first class honours.
Of the total graduands, 94 finished with second class upper degrees, 31 earned second class lower honours, while eight graduated with third class degrees.
Speaking at the ceremony, Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, who was represented by his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, commended the management of the university for its achievements, describing the late former governor, Abiola Ajimobi, as a visionary whose foresight led to the establishment of the university.
“The story of Tech-U continues to unfold, and we remain committed to offering the necessary support to ensure that its founding principles are realised and its strategic goals are accomplished without hindrance,” Makinde said.
He reiterated that education remains one of the four pillars of his administration.
“Our policies and investments over the last six years have been driven by a firm belief that education, at all levels, is the most reliable pathway to shared prosperity, human development and long-term economic sustainability,” he said.
Acknowledging the funding and infrastructure challenges facing the institution, the governor assured the university of continued government support.
“Our interventions so far include sustaining the ALGON Scholarship Programme, allocating one of the new Primary Health Centres to serve the university community, rehabilitating internal campus roads, enhancing security through expanded perimeter fencing, and establishing an Amotekun Security Base at the university entrance with routine internal patrols,” Makinde said.
He noted that universities are globally recognised as hubs of knowledge, innovation and societal progress.
“Designed to develop the brain and train the hands, Tech-U is uniquely positioned to lead skills development, technology transfer and innovation in Oyo State. With its location within an emerging industrial corridor, the university should strengthen industry–academia partnerships that will deliver research-based solutions for the state and the nation,” he added.
In his remarks, the vice chancellor (VC), Prof. Adesola Ajayi, praised the graduands for their resilience and determination in the face of challenges, describing their achievement as a reflection of discipline and excellence.
“You have worked hard, persevered through challenges and demonstrated discipline in the pursuit of your dreams.
“Today, you step forward not merely as recipients of degrees, but as ambassadors of this institution—individuals equipped with knowledge, character and the confidence to shape the world around you,” Ajayi said.
He urged the graduates to uphold excellence and integrity, remain adaptable and innovative, and live lives of purpose and impact.
The VC also commended Makinde for his consistent support to the university, particularly in the areas of security and academic development, while highlighting challenges confronting the institution.
“Like many young and rapidly growing universities, Tech-U has made remarkable progress. Yet, this progress continues to be constrained by several systemic challenges that require urgent and strategic intervention,” Ajayi said.
He listed the challenges as inadequate physical infrastructure, insufficient funding for research and innovation, shortage of senior academic staff, limited student hostels and social amenities, weak digital infrastructure and the sustainability of recurrent expenditure.
“Despite these challenges, the university has demonstrated tremendous resilience and judicious management of available resources. However, to fully realise the founding vision of a world-class technical university, sustained and strategic government intervention remains critical,” the VC added.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Adesola Adeduntan, lauded the governor for his sustained commitment to education and institutional development.
“Good governance is measured not only by promises made, but by lives improved and futures secured.
“Projects such as the Circular Road, the University Clinic and the perimeter fencing are far more than infrastructure; they are bold statements of commitment to security, expansion and institutional confidence,” Adeduntan said.
